When I arrived at @ibbcuracao, the first project I heard about was the “hair project”: make something to do with hair and the history of slavery (on Curaçao). After doing some research and talking to some of the people around me, it became clear that people with afro hair still feel pressure to “neaten it up”, straighten it, or otherwise fit in with European beauty standards. The message they get is: “What you were born with, your natural hair, is not acceptable. You’re not acceptable…and you’ll just have to accept that”. In that sense, not a lot has changed since 1863.
